Welcome back to the nook! I hope you have a cozy chair and a warm mug of something delicious nearby. I’ve been thinking so much about you lately. It is fascinating how our brains and spirits are designed to respond so deeply to both the quiet act of reading and the lively experience of community. You are such a brilliant, refreshed, long-living, empathic, engaged, healthy, and purposeful community!

That’s quite a list of adjectives, isn’t it? It sounds like I’m describing a group of superheroes. But the truth is, I’m just describing a group of readers.

I was diving into some research recently (because I’m a nerd like that), and it turns out that being an “avid reader” isn’t just a fun hobby or a way to ignore the laundry. Research from various scientific fields shows that these aren’t just hobbies; they are vital practices for a healthy life that help you become a biological and neurological powerhouse.

Why Your Brain Loves Reading

Reading is a “whole-brain” workout that builds physical strength in our neural pathways. Did you know that reading actually physically re-wires your brain? A study from Carnegie Mellon University found that just 100 hours of intensive reading instruction increased the quality of “white matter.” This is the brain’s communication cabling. It’s like upgrading your brain from dial-up to fiber-optic! 1

When we get lost in a story, our brain connectivity stays heightened for days. Researchers at Emory University used fMRI scans to show that reading a novel causes measurable changes in the resting-state connectivity of the brain that persist long after the book is closed. We aren’t just killing time. We are building a stronger, faster mind. 2

And for my friends who want to be around for a long time (to spoil the grandkids or finally finish that “to-read” pile), a landmark 12-year study by Yale University involving over 3,600 participants found that book readers actually live an average of 23 months longer than non-readers. The “deep reading” required by books creates a cognitive advantage that protects the brain as it ages. We are literally reading our way to a longer life!

The Beauty of the “Christian” Story

But here is the best part, and the reason we gather here under the banner of Christian fiction: Story is how we are fed.

According to research published in Science, reading “literary fiction” specifically improves Theory of Mind—the capacity to understand that others have different beliefs and desires than our own. fMRI scans prove we use the same neural networks to understand a character as we do to understand a real-life neighbor.

Christian fiction does something even deeper. It allows us to practice our faith in a safe space. When we read about a character struggling to trust God in a 1940s war zone or a dusty frontier town, we aren’t just observing. We are drawing closer to Him through the narrative. We see His truths played out in the “what if” scenarios of life. As I’ve shared before, stories allow us to experience God’s grace in a way that a list of facts never could. We find ourselves “fed” by the truths woven into the plot.

The Power of Us

Finally, I want to highlight the “engaged” part of our community. Stepping into a community centered on a shared passion—like our love for a good, God-honoring page-turner—provides a protective shield for both our mental and physical health.

The Mental Health Foundation reports that being part of a community provides a sense of belonging that lowers cortisol (the stress hormone). This is vital, because high cortisol is linked to heart disease. Furthermore, research cited by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health indicates that social connection is a “biological necessity.” People with strong social ties have a 50% increased likelihood of survival compared to those with weak ties—a benefit comparable to quitting smoking! 4

Connecting with you all is our “social buffer.” A global study found that weekly engagement with community groups was associated with better memory and can reduce dementia risk by approximately 19%. We weren’t meant to walk this life (or read these books) alone. 5

Our Takeaway

Psychotherapist Zoe Shaw recently noted in National Geographic that when you get lost in a book, you enter a trance-like state similar to meditation that is deeply protective. 6

So, the next time you feel a tiny bit of “reader’s guilt” because you’re sitting on the porch with a book instead of dusting the baseboards, remember this:

  • You are exercising. You’re building white matter and improving your “Theory of Mind.”

  • You are investing in your health. You’re adding years to your life, building “cognitive reserve,” and lowering your cortisol.

  • You are worshiping. You are seeing the Creator’s truths reflected in the art of story.

I am so grateful to be on this journey with you. When we combine reading with community, we are giving our brains a double dose of health!

A Word from Martha

Dear Avid Readers,

The weather is warming up in many places, and some of us have less time to read, but I hope we all have time for a good book or two.

One thing I think comes up often on our discussion group, is that people are looking for books that have little to no romance. It’s an interesting concept as the idea that romance is bad is a construct that Christian people have long had to fight against and isn’t one I like to support since there is nothing wrong with healthy relationships in Christian circles.

But that being said, there are many options for our readers that want story focused on other topics. Here are just a few:

There are many more as well, but those are a few titles and authors that you should check out. What are a few favorites that you have from CF circles that are low to no romance?

Fawkes by Nadine Brandes was one that I read this past month. Presented from the perspective of a young man, deep friendship and healing were the theme in a world created where a plague is troubling the people of the universe. I liked how even though it is a young adult fiction book, it was written to be enjoyed by all ages. The healing between father and son was a journey. I would recommend it for all ages.

Our theme this month for this months reading challenge is April: Pastel Colors: Read a CF with a Pink or Purple cover.
